Grouse Mountain Lodge is an independent ski lodge near Whitefish, Montana — 145 rooms across log-construction lodge buildings, a restaurant and bar, an indoor pool and hot tubs. It's a working full-property at the scale that's becoming rare in independent ski-town hospitality. Whitefish itself is one of the smaller mountain towns in northwest Montana, and the lodge has been the substantive non-chain answer here for decades.

Whitefish Mountain Resort (the ski mountain, ten minutes north of town) and Glacier National Park (40 minutes north of the lodge) are the two main reasons to stay. The lodge is positioned to handle both.

The setting

On Highway 40 (Big Mountain Road) just outside Whitefish town center, on the route up to Whitefish Mountain Resort. The walk into downtown Whitefish — Central Avenue's restaurants and shops, the Whitefish Lake — is fifteen minutes. The free SNOW shuttle runs between town and the ski mountain in winter. Glacier National Park's West Entrance is forty minutes north on Highway 2.

The drive in from Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) is twenty minutes. From Missoula, two and a half hours south.

The building

A campus of log-construction lodge buildings around a central main lodge — stone fireplaces, exposed timber, peaked roofs, a working ski-lodge aesthetic. The interior leans rustic Americana of the practical kind: stone, timber, leather, the kind of comfort-over-design register that's appropriate for the setting.

The renovation work has been gradual. The lodge has served at this scale for decades and the building stock reflects layered renovation over solid bones.

The rooms

A hundred and forty-five rooms across the campus. Categories climb from compact rooms (around $285) up through suites with fireplaces, kitchenettes, and balconies. Beds are queens and kings, linens are good, bathrooms are functional and updated. Some units have full kitchens (useful for multi-night stays). Mountain-view rooms face Whitefish Mountain; lawn-view rooms face the property's grounds.

Food & drink

The on-site Logan's Restaurant runs Montana-American — regional steaks, regional fish, a competent wine list. The bar (one of the long-running local meeting spots) is open through the evening. Open to non-guests by reservation. There's also a casual cafe for breakfast and quick lunch.

Nearby

Whitefish Mountain Resort is ten minutes north up Big Mountain Road — winter skiing, summer chairlift rides and trails. Downtown Whitefish (Central Avenue restaurants, the Stumptown Historical Society) is fifteen minutes' walk or a short drive. Whitefish Lake is similar distance — the public beach at City Beach is a summer destination. Drive forty minutes north to Glacier National Park's West Entrance — the Going-to-the-Sun Road (open mid-summer through October) is one of the great American mountain drives. Drive longer for the Bowman Lake area, Polebridge, and the North Fork country.
