Catalina Island is 22 miles off the LA coast — accessible only by ferry, no rental cars permitted in Avalon. The hotel scene is entirely independent: Mt. Ada (a 1921 Wrigley mansion, six rooms), Snug Harbor Inn, the Avalon Hotel, Hotel Metropole. Nearly every property is family-owned; the chain hotels never made it across the channel.
