Garden Wall Inn

A 1923 Craftsman B&B — five rooms, walking distance to downtown Whitefish.

Refined AmericanaHistoric InnRomantic · CountryClapboard & Porch

A 1923 Craftsman B&B on Spokane Avenue, walking distance to downtown Whitefish — five rooms, owner-operated, the kind of small Montana mountain-town inn that runs more on personal attention than amenity stack. The Garden Wall Inn is the small alternative to Whitefish's mountain-resort lodging: it's not slope-side, it's not a ski lodge, it's a house in town that's been a B&B for decades.

Whitefish is the small Montana town twenty minutes from Glacier National Park — a real working town with a downtown, not a developer-built resort village. The Garden Wall sits a few blocks from Central Avenue and the Whitefish Lake area.

The setting

Whitefish sits at the foot of the Whitefish Range in northwestern Montana, twenty minutes from the western entrance to Glacier National Park. Central Avenue is the historic downtown, walking distance from the inn. Whitefish Lake (with its public beach and the Lodge at Whitefish Lake) is two minutes north. Whitefish Mountain Resort (skiing in winter, lift-served hiking in summer) is fifteen minutes north.

Glacier National Park's west entrance is twenty-five minutes east. Lake McDonald in Glacier is thirty-five minutes east. Apgar village is thirty minutes east. Going-to-the-Sun Road's west portal starts at Apgar.

The building

A 1923 Craftsman bungalow — low-slung, deep eaves, shingled exterior, with the kind of Pacific-Northwest-influenced Craftsman vernacular that Montana's middle-class homes built in the 1920s. Materials are clapboard, shingled accents, and stone. The interior keeps the original Craftsman bones (wide-plank floors, built-ins, fireplace) and adds modern infrastructure where needed.

Public spaces include the parlor with a stone fireplace, the breakfast room, and the front porch.

The rooms

Five rooms across the two main floors. Each is a different size — typical of a 1920s house converted to lodging. Bathrooms are private. Beds are king or queen. The interior is refined-Americana with Craftsman period accents — wood, woven textiles, simple furniture.

Rates from $295 in shoulder; ski-season weekends and Glacier-summer climb.

Food & drink

A full breakfast is included — cooked, served family-style in the dining room. There's no on-site restaurant. Whitefish's downtown is a five-minute walk for restaurants — Loula's Café, Tupelo Grille, Pescado Blanco, and a wide casual scene.

On the property

The porch and the small garden are the social rhythm. There's no pool, no spa, no gym. The inn is small and personal.
