Good Medicine Lodge

Nine rooms in a Craftsman-revival lodge — the Whitefish design-set's pick.

Good Medicine Lodge is a nine-room Craftsman-revival lodge in Whitefish, Montana — small, owner-operated, and the property the regional design crowd points at when they want a Whitefish recommendation that isn't a slope-side condo or a chain. The building's Craftsman-style detailing — exposed timber, stone fireplace, peaked roofs, deep porches — runs through the public spaces and into the rooms.

Whitefish's lodging market has churned over the past two decades but Good Medicine has stayed on the small, design-leaning, owner-personal end of the spectrum.

The setting

In Whitefish, on Wisconsin Avenue, walking distance to the central restaurant strip on Central Avenue and a short drive to Whitefish Mountain Resort and Glacier National Park's West Entrance. The walk to Central Avenue's restaurants is ten minutes; the drive to Whitefish Mountain Resort's lift base is ten minutes north on Big Mountain Road.

The drive from Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) is twenty minutes; from Missoula, two and a half hours south.

The building

A two-story Craftsman-revival lodge with stone-and-timber construction, peaked roofs, deep front porch, and the kind of exposed-beam interior that's the era's signature. The interior leans rustic Americana with refined-mountain overlays — pine-and-wool, leather upholstery, a stone fireplace in the parlor, a small library off the lobby. Public spaces are restrained.

Owner-operated, careful renovation, period detailing intact.

The rooms

Nine rooms across the lodge. Categories climb from compact rooms (around $285) up through suites with fireplaces, soaking tubs, and the better light. Beds are queens and kings, linens are heavy, bathrooms are updated. Several rooms have working fireplaces and small private decks.

There's no elevator. Stairs to the upper floor are part of the experience.

Food & drink

There's no full restaurant. A multi-course breakfast is included, served in the dining room. Wine and hors d'oeuvres run in the early evening. For dinner, the walk into Whitefish's Central Avenue reaches the town's restaurants — Cafe Kandahar at the mountain base, Tupelo Grille, Latitude 48, Buffalo Cafe.
