Cape Ann.

Cape Ann is Massachusetts's other peninsula — Gloucester's working harbor, Rockport's clapboard shops, Manchester-by-the-Sea's mansion district. The independent inn scene is small but real: Beauport Hotel, Emerson Inn by the Sea (1846), Bass Rocks Ocean Inn, the Cape Ann Marina Resort. The chain hotels are inland on Route 128 — irrelevant to the Cape Ann visit.

Cape Ann is Massachusetts's other peninsula — the granite-coast one, north of Boston, often confused with Cape Cod by people who haven't been. Gloucester is the working harbor (still America's oldest commercial fishing port). Rockport is the postcard half, all clapboard and gallery windows. Manchester-by-the-Sea is the mansion district. The independent inn scene is small but real; the chain hotels stay inland off Route 128, which means the coastal lodging is almost entirely family-owned by default.

What this looks like

Cape Ann is a true island — the Annisquam River cuts across the back, technically separating it from the mainland. From Boston, take 128 north to its terminus; the drive is forty-five minutes without traffic. Gloucester is the south side of the cape, harbor-facing, with the Fitz Henry Lane house and the Crow's Nest. Eastern Point and Bass Rocks are the residential bluffs east of the harbor. Rockport sits on the northeast tip, with Bearskin Neck — a granite spit lined with red-painted fish shacks turned galleries — pointing out into Sandy Bay. Pigeon Cove is the quieter Rockport neighborhood north of town. Manchester-by-the-Sea, Magnolia, and Annisquam are the West Cape villages. The whole peninsula is about ten miles end to end.

The standouts

  • Beauport Hotel Gloucester — a 2016 oceanfront boutique on Pavilion Beach. 94 rooms, rooftop pool, 1606 restaurant.
  • Bass Rocks Ocean Inn — an 1899 oceanfront estate on Atlantic Road. 51 rooms, the Gloucester family-pick of the cape.
  • Emerson Inn by the Sea — where Ralph Waldo Emerson summered. An 1846 oceanfront inn in Pigeon Cove, 36 rooms.
  • The Tuck Inn — an 1790 sea-captain's home in Rockport's harbor. 11 rooms, walking distance to Bearskin Neck.

When to come / who it's for

Memorial Day through Columbus Day is the season. July and August are peak — booked beaches, harbor-tour boats running every hour, every restaurant on a wait. The local pick is September: water still warm enough to swim, the schooner festival hits Labor Day weekend, and rooms drop 25-30%. Foliage runs second and third weeks of October. Off-season Rockport mostly closes; Gloucester stays open because of the fishing fleet. Cape Ann rewards three nights — long enough to do Halibut Point at sunrise, a Whale Watch out of Gloucester Harbor, a half-day at Good Harbor or Wingaersheek, dinner at the Causeway, and a slow walk through the Rocky Neck art colony. Best for couples and families with school-age kids. Good train access via the Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail.

Nearby / what else

Halibut Point State Park — the abandoned granite quarry on Rockport's northern tip, with cliff-top sea views. The Rocky Neck Art Colony in Gloucester (oldest continuously operating in America). Whale watching with Cape Ann Whale Watch or Seven Seas. The Crane Estate and Crane Beach in nearby Ipswich (fifteen minutes off-cape). Hammond Castle Museum on the Magnolia shore. For food: the Causeway in Gloucester for fried clams, Roy Moore Lobster on Bearskin Neck (cash only, eat on the dock), Passports for breakfast in Gloucester.

Frequently asked
How long is the drive from Boston?
About 45 minutes via I-93 to Route 128. The Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail also runs from North Station and is a real option — Rockport's stop is in the middle of town.
Cape Ann or Cape Cod?
Cape Ann is closer to Boston, smaller, granite-coast, and less crowded. Cape Cod is sandier, longer, and has more towns and traffic. Different trips entirely; Cape Ann is the easier weekend.
When's the best time to come?
September. Warm water, the schooner festival on Labor Day weekend, and rooms 25-30% cheaper than August. October has the foliage.
Are the inns dog-friendly?
Several Gloucester inns take dogs; Beauport allows them on the rooftop. Rockport B&Bs are mixed — call ahead. Good Harbor Beach is dog-leashed off-season only.
Is the off-season worth it?
Gloucester yes, Rockport mostly no — half of Bearskin Neck closes November through April. Halibut Point and the cliff walks are arguably better in winter quiet.
