The Landing Resort

Lakefront on the south shore — 82 rooms, the only Forbes-rated independent on Lake Tahoe.

Eighty-two rooms directly on the south shore of Lake Tahoe, with a private beach, a full spa, and the only Forbes-rated independent hotel on the lake. The Landing's locational case is simple: you're at the water, not three blocks back. Walking distance to Heavenly Village and the gondola; ski-in by short shuttle in winter, paddle-out in summer.

Independent on Lake Tahoe is a small category — most of the bigger lakeside lodging is corporate flag or MGM-style casino-resort. The Landing fills the smaller-scale, design-forward end of the market.

The setting

The hotel sits on Lake Tahoe Boulevard at the edge of South Lake Tahoe, with a private sand beach immediately in front and the lake opening north. Heavenly Village's gondola is a 10-minute walk; the casinos at Stateline are five-to-ten by car; Emerald Bay and the West Shore are 25 minutes around the lake. Reno-Tahoe airport is an hour north on US-50.

The drive in from San Francisco is 3.5 hours via US-50. Winter chain-control on the passes is a real consideration October through April.

The building

A multi-story stone-and-timber lakeside hotel, completed in 2012, designed in the contemporary-mountain vocabulary — stone bases, timber upper floors, big windows facing the lake. Materials are stone, timber, leather, and glass. Public spaces include the lakefront restaurant, a roof deck with views, the spa, and the lobby fireplace lounge.

Independently developed and owned. The Forbes rating is a regular renewal.

The rooms

Eighty-two rooms across categories — lake-view kings, partial-view, suites with separate sitting areas, and a few specialty suites with fireplaces and balconies. From around $595 in shoulder seasons; peak winter rates run higher. Bathrooms are tiled and modern with rainfall showers and soaking tubs. Lake-view rooms are the ones to ask for; some of the inland rooms face the parking and street.

Food & drink

Jimmy's at The Landing is the on-property restaurant — a lakefront dining room with seasonal-Californian menus, breakfast through dinner, open to non-guests. The terrace seating in summer is the photograph everyone takes. The Landing also runs a roof-deck bar with seasonal cocktail service.

  • Couples doing a winter ski weekend or summer paddle weekend with a single base
  • Repeat Tahoe visitors who've done the casinos and Hyatt Incline and want a smaller property

  • Anyone wanting a casino-resort scale or a kids' club program
  • Budget travelers — this is the top of the in-town independent market
