Cottage Inn at Lake Tahoe

Twenty-two log-cabin-style rooms — Tahoe City lakefront, family-owned for two generations.

Cottage Inn at Lake Tahoe is twenty-two log-cabin-style rooms on the lakefront in Tahoe City — family-owned across two generations, beach access across the road, and a small breakfast operation in the main lodge. It's a working Tahoe inn rather than a Tahoe brand experience, and the appeal is the directness: log cabins, lake, fireplaces in many rooms, and a thirty-second walk to the water.

Tahoe's lodging market has consolidated heavily over the last two decades into chain-affiliated resorts at the larger ski areas. The Cottage Inn is one of the small holdouts on the West Shore that hasn't been swept up.

The setting

On West Lake Boulevard in Tahoe City, on the lake's North Shore at the West Shore inflection point. From the inn, you cross the road to the West Shore beach access at Sunnyside or walk five minutes to the inn's small private beach. The Tahoe City pedestrian core — Fanny Bridge over the Truckee River outflow, the restaurants on North Lake Boulevard — is a fifteen-minute walk or a three-minute drive.

In winter, Squaw Valley (Palisades Tahoe) is fifteen minutes north; Homewood is fifteen minutes south. Northstar is twenty-five minutes around the lake.

The building

A small lodge with detached log-cabin-style rooms dispersed across the lakefront lot. The aesthetic is rustic Americana — pine and wool, stone fireplaces, log construction with the chinking still visible, sloped roofs. The lobby is small with a stone fireplace and a guest lounge. It feels personal rather than corporate, and the operation reflects that.

The architecture has aged gracefully. The cabins look like they're meant to be there.

The rooms

Twenty-two rooms across the cabins and a small main lodge. Categories climb from compact cabin rooms (around $285) up through fireplace suites and the larger lakefront cottages. Beds are queens and kings, linens are good, bathrooms are functional and updated. Many rooms have gas or wood-burning fireplaces; several have small private decks or porches.

The lakefront-row cabins are the ones to ask for; they have the best lake exposure.

Food & drink

There's no full restaurant. A continental breakfast is included in the main lodge. For dinner, drive or walk into Tahoe City for Wolfdale's, Christy Hill, Jake's on the Lake, or the Bridgetender. The casual lakeside lunch at Sunnyside Restaurant (across the road) is a North Shore institution.
