Black Bear Lodge

Thirteen log-cabin-style rooms with stone fireplaces — adults-only, the South Lake B&B classic.

Rustic AmericanaHistoric InnRomantic · CountryStone & TimberPine & Wool

A 13-room log-cabin-style B&B on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, family-owned, with stone fireplaces in every room and the kind of pine-and-wool aesthetic that fits the area without performing it. Black Bear Lodge is the South Lake B&B classic — a quieter answer to the casino-and-condo strip on Highway 50.

It is genuinely small, genuinely owner-operated, and genuinely on the more residential side of town. The Heavenly gondola is a five-minute drive.

The setting

South Lake Tahoe has two faces — the casino strip on the Nevada side and the residential streets on the California side. Black Bear sits on the California residential side, on Pioneer Trail, two miles east of the lake itself and a five-minute drive from Heavenly Mountain Resort's California Base Lodge. Pope Beach and Camp Richardson are ten minutes west. The drive from Reno-Tahoe airport is an hour.

This part of South Lake feels like the old version of the town — pine forest, a few houses, a small store every couple of miles.

The building

A log-cabin-style lodge with stone foundations and timber framing — the bones of a 1980s-style mountain home, expanded into a small inn. Public rooms include a fireplaced great room, a small library, and a breakfast porch. Materials are stone, hand-hewn timber, pine paneling, wool throws. Antlers used sparingly. The aesthetic is mountain-traditional and deliberately not redesigned — Pottery Barn ranch, you might say, but in a good way.

The rooms

Thirteen rooms across the main lodge and detached cabins. Each has a stone fireplace, a king or queen bed, and a private bath with jetted tub. Cabins have full kitchenettes and private decks. From-rates open around $295 in season — solid value for South Lake. Bathrooms are tile and stone, well kept.

Food & drink

There's no restaurant. A full hot breakfast is served daily in the great room or on the porch. For dinner you drive five to ten minutes: Edgewood Restaurant for the lakefront polish, Riva Grill for the casual lakefront dinner, Cafe Fiore for the long-running Italian. The hosts will book.

On the property

A small hot tub, a fire pit, the porch, the great room. There's no pool, no spa. The lake and Heavenly are short drives.

  • Stone fireplaces in every room

Who it's for
