Shell Island Resort
Oceanfront at the north end of Wrightsville Beach — 160 all-suite rooms, direct beach access.
Shell Island Resort sits at the very north end of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina — past the residential blocks, with the Mason Inlet wildlife area beyond and nothing between the building and the Atlantic. A hundred and sixty all-suite rooms, direct beach access from a single tower, and a layout that's frankly atypical for the region: every room is an oceanfront suite. Most coastal Carolina hotels at this scale are arranged around parking lots. This one is arranged around the ocean.
It's not a design hotel. It's a working family beach property, owner-run, where the architecture and amenities are organized around the obvious priority — getting from your room to the sand without ceremony.
The setting
Wrightsville Beach is a thin barrier island east of Wilmington, North Carolina. Shell Island is at its northern terminus, where the inlet separates Wrightsville from Figure Eight Island to the north. From the property, the Mason Inlet bird sanctuary runs out to a sand spit that's one of the better walking and birdwatching loops on the Carolina coast.
The drive in from Wilmington's downtown is twenty minutes. From Raleigh, two and a half hours; from Charlotte, three and a half. Most guests are repeat visitors from the Carolinas and Virginia.
The building
A single multi-story oceanfront tower, built later than most of the strip's smaller hotels and arranged so that every room faces the water. The aesthetic is refined-Americana coastal — light interiors, white-and-blue palette, the kind of clean rather than designed look that holds up over multi-year renovation cycles. Public spaces include a lobby with views east, a pool deck, and a casual cafe.
It's not aiming at boutique. It's aiming at consistent, oceanfront, all-suite, with the room product as the main lever.
The rooms
A hundred and sixty all-suite rooms — every room is a one-bedroom or two-bedroom suite with a separate sitting area, a kitchenette or full kitchen, and an oceanfront balcony. Categories climb from one-bedroom suites (around $325) through two-bedroom configurations and the larger oceanfront layouts. Beds are queens and kings; linens are good; bathrooms are functional. The kitchens are useful for multi-night stays — a meaningful cost lever for families.
Food & drink
A casual cafe is on-site for breakfast and a light lunch. There's no formal restaurant. For dinner, the drive into Wrightsville Beach proper is five minutes and reaches the strip's restaurants — Sweet & Savory, Tower 7, the Bluewater, South Beach Grill, and the Fish House at the Wrightsville Beach Brewery. Wilmington's downtown food scene is fifteen minutes further.
