Front Street Inn

A 1920s Salvation Army building turned boutique — 12 rooms on the downtown waterfront.

Refined AmericanaHistoric InnRomantic · CountryBrass & Velvet

A 1920s-era former Salvation Army building turned 12-room boutique on Wilmington's downtown waterfront. Brick, brass, and adaptive-reuse mid-renovation — the kind of building that gives a small inn structural character no new-build can replicate. Walking distance to the Cape Fear River walk, Front Street's restaurants, and the historic riverfront district that's been Wilmington's identity since the antebellum.

The Front Street Inn is one of the few owner-run downtown boutiques in Wilmington. Most of the river-walk-area lodging is corporate; this is the quieter, smaller, more architectural alternative.

The setting

The inn sits at 215 South Front Street in downtown Wilmington, a block from the Cape Fear River walk and walking distance to the historic district's mansions, the Bellamy Mansion museum, and the brick-paved blocks where the old port-city architecture is still continuous. Wrightsville Beach is 15 minutes east; Carolina Beach is 25 south.

The drive in from Raleigh is two hours; from Charleston, three; from the Outer Banks, four. ILM airport is 15 minutes northeast.

The building

A 1920s brick Salvation Army building — three stories, double-hung windows, the practical ecclesiastical architecture that put up boarding houses and meeting halls a century ago. The renovation kept the brick exterior and high-ceilinged interiors, replacing the institutional finish with brass-and-velvet boutique-hotel interior work. There's a small lobby, a sunroom-style breakfast space, and a back garden.

Locally owned. The adaptive reuse is the building's narrative — Salvation Army to inn is a particular kind of Wilmington story.

The rooms

Twelve rooms across kings and queens, plus a couple of suites. From around $245. High ceilings (a feature of the original building), updated bathrooms, dark wood furniture, and brass fixtures. The aesthetic leans country-traditional rather than minimalist. Bathrooms have been modernized.

Food & drink

There's no on-site full-service restaurant. Full breakfast is included, served in the breakfast room. For dinner, walking distance to Front Street's restaurants — Manna, Pinpoint, Caprice Bistro, the Copper Penny — and the river-walk options. The Pour House and Cape Fear Wine and Beer round out the walking-radius options.
