A six-room B&B in an 1848 Italianate mansion in Wilmington, two blocks from the Cape Fear River. Rosehill is a small inn done in the way small inns used to be — a wraparound porch with rocking chairs, the breakfast served at one long table, and the kind of host who actually remembers what you said about your dinner reservation. The 1848 building is the artifact; the running of it is the experience.

Wilmington is the underrated mid-Atlantic port city — Cape Fear River, a real downtown, beach access fifteen minutes east. Rosehill puts you in walking distance to the historic core.

The setting

The inn sits in Wilmington's downtown historic district, on Third Street, two blocks from the Cape Fear riverwalk and three from Front Street's restaurants. The neighborhood is Italianate and Greek Revival mansions, live oaks, and brick sidewalks. Wrightsville Beach is fifteen minutes east; the USS North Carolina battleship across the river is five.

The drive from Raleigh is two hours; from Charlotte, three and a half. The walk into downtown is five minutes.

The building

An 1848 Italianate mansion — symmetrical clapboard facade, deeply bracketed eaves, tall first-floor windows, the wraparound front porch you'd hope for. The interior keeps original wide-plank pine floors, marble fireplace mantels, twelve-foot ceilings on the ground floor. Public rooms include the parlor with a fireplace, the dining room (where breakfast is served at one long table), and the porch. Materials are clapboard, pine, brass — not designer-restrained, but well-curated.

The rooms

Six rooms across two floors. Each has a private bath, queen or king bed, and an individual character — fireplace, claw-foot tub, or four-poster, depending. Beds are dressed in linen; furniture is period rather than contemporary. From-rates open around $225 including a full hot breakfast. Wi-Fi is decent; cell service is normal.

Food & drink

There's no restaurant. A full Southern breakfast is served at the dining room table — eggs, grits, biscuits, fruit, coffee. For dinner you walk three minutes to Front Street, where Rx Restaurant, manna, and PinPoint are the established picks. The hosts will book.

On the property

The wraparound porch, a small back garden, and the parlor. There's no pool, no spa, no gym. The host runs an evening wine reception in the parlor that often becomes the social center of a stay.
