Poetry Inn

Five suites on a Stags Leap District hilltop — Cliff Lede Vineyards' tiny, all-suite hideaway.

Five suites on a Stags Leap District hilltop in eastern Napa Valley — the all-suite, almost-secret hideaway from Cliff Lede Vineyards. From around $1,895 a night, two-night minimum. Poetry Inn is what happens when a winery decides to build a hotel that's actually as ambitious as the wine.

This is the rarefied end of the Napa lodging market. Five suites is the entire property. The ratio of staff to guests, the food program, and the wine access are all sized for that count.

The setting

The inn sits on a private hillside above the Silverado Trail in the Stags Leap District — the prestigious east-side AVA where Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, Shafer, and Cliff Lede produce. Yountville (the French Laundry, Bouchon) is 10 minutes; downtown Napa is 15; St. Helena is 25. The view from the hilltop runs west across the Napa Valley toward the Mayacamas range.

The drive in from San Francisco is 75 minutes via the Golden Gate; from SFO, an hour and 15.

The building

A purpose-built hilltop estate in the contemporary-architectural-minimalist tradition — stone, timber, walls of glass facing the view, deep eaves, fireplaces in every public space. Materials are stone and timber; the aesthetic is Napa contemporary in line with what Cliff Lede's tasting-room architecture established next door. The five suites are all in the main building.

Independently owned (Cliff Lede / Lede family). Operated as a separate property from the winery.

The rooms

Five suites — that's the entire property. Each is named after a poet (Wordsworth, Whitman, Dickinson, Yeats, Frost). Layouts include king bed, fireplace, soaking tub, walk-in shower, and a private balcony or terrace with the valley view. From around $1,895 with a two-night minimum; peak harvest rates run higher. Bathrooms have steam showers and double vanities. The aesthetic is committed throughout.

Food & drink

A full breakfast is included, made to order. There's no full restaurant program but light fare and wine service are available throughout the day. The Cliff Lede tasting room next door has formal tasting and food experiences. For dinner, Yountville (the French Laundry, Bouchon, Bistro Jeanty, Ad Hoc) is 10 minutes. The hotel's concierge handles tasting-room reservations and dinner planning.
