El Bonita Motel

A 1930s Art Deco motor lodge on the highway — 41 rooms, the only motel left in St. Helena.

Retro Motor LodgeReimagined Motor LodgePlayful · RetroPine & Wool

A 1930s Art Deco motor lodge on Highway 29 in St. Helena — 41 rooms organized around a small pool, the only true motel left in the upper Napa Valley and the only sub-$300 starting rate within walking distance of the St. Helena village. El Bonita is the budget-friendly Napa lodging that locals tell out-of-town friends about and that no one writes magazine features on, mostly because no one seems to want it priced up.

The bones are real Art Deco — curved corners, pastel concrete, neon-lit signage from when the highway brought motorists rather than wine tourists. The rooms have been kept up. The pool has been kept up. The pricing has been kept honest, which on this stretch of Napa is essentially the property's value proposition.

The setting

St. Helena is the small upvalley town between Yountville and Calistoga, on Highway 29, in the heart of the cabernet-and-tasting-room corridor. El Bonita sits on the south end of town, walking distance to Main Street's restaurants and to a few of the bigger wineries within a mile or two.

Yountville (French Laundry, Bouchon, the Yountville restaurant strip) is fifteen minutes south. Calistoga (mud baths, hot springs) is fifteen minutes north. Napa proper is twenty-five minutes south. The Silverado Trail's wineries run parallel a mile east.

The building

A 1930s Art Deco motor court — single-story stucco rooms with curved corners, a pastel paint scheme, and the original neon roadside sign restored. The pool sits in a small courtyard at the back. Materials are stucco, concrete, painted wood trim, and the kind of period detailing (curved stair rails, glass-block accents) that the era's roadside hotels did well.

There's a small lobby; otherwise the building is essentially the rooms and the pool.

The rooms

Forty-one rooms in the original motel typology — single-story or two-story, parking out front, pool in back. Categories are simple: standards, larger king rooms, a few suites with kitchenettes. Bathrooms are updated and basic. Beds are good. Don't expect period-perfect Art Deco interiors; the rooms are practical, clean, and well-kept.

Rates from $245 in shoulder, which on Highway 29 is unusually accessible.

Food & drink

No restaurant on site. A small continental breakfast is included. St. Helena's Main Street is a five-minute walk for restaurants — Cook, Press, Goose & Gander, Acacia House, plus a number of casual options. Coffee is a block away.
