Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort

Family-owned since 1958 — 32 rooms on the North Shore, private beach, the old-Tahoe vibe.

Retro Motor LodgeHistoric InnPlayful · RetroPine & Wool

A 32-room family-owned resort on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, in Tahoe Vista, run by the Mourelatos family since 1958. Private beach, the lake from your front door, and the kind of old-Tahoe wood-and-pine vibe that disappeared from most of the South Shore decades ago. Mourelatos is the rare Tahoe lodging where the same family is still running the front desk three generations in.

It is the North Shore answer for travelers who want a real lake experience without the casinos.

The setting

Tahoe Vista sits on the quieter, north side of Lake Tahoe, on Highway 28 between Kings Beach and Carnelian Bay. The resort fronts a private 350-foot stretch of beach with a pier and buoy. Northstar California is twenty minutes east; the Truckee River and the Olympic Valley (Palisades Tahoe) are thirty minutes west. The drive from Reno-Tahoe airport is an hour.

The North Shore is markedly quieter than the South — fewer high-rises, no casinos in California, more pine forest, smaller towns.

The building

A 1950s mid-century lakeside lodge expanded over decades. The aesthetic runs to redwood-stained wood, pine paneling, exposed beams. Public rooms include a fireplaced lobby, a breakfast room, and a beachfront sundeck. Materials are pine, wool, and the occasional retro touch from the 1960s expansion. Honest mid-century Tahoe — the kind of place that hasn't been "elevated" and is better for it.

The rooms

Thirty-two rooms in a wide range of categories. Standard king and queen rooms, lakefront suites with kitchenettes, family-friendly two-bedroom layouts, and a few cottages. All but a few have lake views. Beds are kings or queens; bathrooms are tile, refreshed in recent cycles. From-rates open around $285 in season — strong value for the North Shore.

Food & drink

There's no restaurant. A continental breakfast is set out daily. For dinner, the North Shore options are five to fifteen minutes' drive: Spindleshanks in Carnelian Bay, Soule Domain in Crystal Bay, Lone Eagle Grille at the Hyatt, and Wolfdale's in Tahoe City. Lanza's in Kings Beach is the casual Italian.

On the property

A 350-foot private beach with a pier, kayak and paddleboard rental on-site, a heated outdoor pool, and a hot tub. There's no spa, no gym in the resort sense.
