Hoffman Haus

A 4-acre Hill Country compound — 45 rooms in 19th-century German cottages and chapel rooms.

A four-acre Hill Country compound on Fredericksburg's east side — forty-five rooms across nineteenth-century German-immigrant cottages, a converted chapel, and a few newer additions. Hoffman Haus is the most architecturally interesting place to stay in Fredericksburg: a campus of restored Sunday Houses (the small German-immigrant cottages farmers built for weekend visits to town) joined together as a single hotel, with a working bakery and chapel rooms threaded through the property.

The pitch is the buildings. Most Fredericksburg lodging is either a recent B&B in a 1990s house or a chain on Highway 290. Hoffman Haus is genuine 19th-century German-Texan architecture, restored carefully and operated as a hotel.

The setting

Fredericksburg sits in the Texas Hill Country eighty miles west of Austin and sixty north of San Antonio. Hoffman Haus is on Hackberry Street, a few minutes' walk east of Main Street and the Marktplatz. The four acres include lawns, gardens, the old chapel, and the cottage clusters.

Main Street's restaurants and shops are five minutes' walk west. The 290 wine corridor (Becker, Pedernales, Grape Creek, William Chris) starts east of town. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is twenty-five minutes north. Luckenbach is fifteen minutes east. Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park is fifteen minutes east.

The building

The compound is a collection of restored 19th-century German-immigrant cottages (Sunday Houses), a converted chapel, and a few newer additions in sympathetic architectural style. Materials are limestone and stone (typical of Hill Country German construction), heavy timber, painted wood, and pine. The aesthetic is rustic-Americana with refined-Americana threaded through — coherent, not theme-park.

Public spaces include the breakfast pavilion, the chapel (used for events and as a guest space), gardens, and a heated pool deck.

The rooms

Forty-five rooms across the cottages, the converted chapel, and the newer additions. Categories vary widely: small Sunday-House cottage rooms (most photogenic), larger king rooms in newer buildings, and a few suite layouts. Many rooms have stone walls, exposed beams, fireplaces, and private patios. Bathrooms have been kept up. Beds are good.

Rates from $425 in shoulder; peak weekends climb.

Food & drink

A full breakfast (often delivered to the room or available at the pavilion) is included — the property runs a working bakery on site for breakfast bread and pastries. There's no full dinner restaurant; Main Street's restaurants are a five-minute walk for dinner.

On the property

The heated outdoor pool, the gardens, and the chapel are the social rhythm. There's a small wellness program and the on-site bakery. No spa, but the operator can arrange in-room massage.
