Hangar Hotel

A WWII-era airfield hangar at the Gillespie County Airport in Fredericksburg, Texas, reimagined as a 50-room art-deco-styled hotel with the Officers' Club bar and runway-side balconies. Gillespie County Airport is still an active general-aviation field — guests can taxi up in a small plane if they fly in. The Hangar Hotel is what happens when a small Hill Country town keeps its WWII airfield and decides to put a hotel on it.

The setting

The hotel sits at 155 Airport Road on Gillespie County Airport's grounds, a few minutes' drive from downtown Fredericksburg. Walking distance to the runway (literally — the rooms face it) and the airport diner. The hotel runs a shuttle to and from downtown Fredericksburg's Main Street (with the National Museum of the Pacific War, the wineries' tasting rooms, and the Hill Country restaurants).

The drive in from Austin is 90 minutes west on US-290; from San Antonio, an hour and 15 north. From the Austin or San Antonio airports, similar drives.

The building

A WWII-era airfield hangar from the 1940s, gutted and rebuilt as a hotel with the original hangar shape and structural steel preserved. The art-deco detailing was added in the renovation — chrome trim, period-style fixtures, leather furniture — to give the property its mid-century-aviation aesthetic. Materials are concrete, glass, timber, and brass. Public spaces include the Officers' Club bar, the diner-style restaurant, and the runway-facing veranda.

Independently developed and owned. The aviation narrative runs through every public-space detail.

The rooms

Fifty rooms across kings and queens. From around $245. Rooms get period-style art-deco furniture, runway-facing windows in many cases, and updated bathrooms. The aesthetic is committed throughout — mid-century aviation, leather, wool, chrome.

Food & drink

The Officers' Club — the on-property bar — runs cocktails through the evening with art-deco styling. The Hangar Hotel diner runs breakfast and lunch. For dinner, the hotel runs a shuttle to downtown Fredericksburg. The downtown restaurant scene — Otto's German Bistro, Vaudeville, Rathskeller — is the dinner program.
