Ventana Big Sur

A 243-acre Big Sur ridge resort — 59 rooms, glamping tents, Japanese baths, adults-only.

A 243-acre Big Sur ridge resort — fifty-nine rooms plus glamping tents, Japanese-style baths, and adults-only programming. Ventana sits on a high ridge above Highway 1, fifteen minutes south of Bixby Bridge, in one of the most scenically saturated stretches of California coast. The property is part of Hyatt's Alila collection — a small handful of flagships that lehotelist counts as inside its independent-hotel scope.

The pitch is the land. 243 acres of redwood and oak ridge above the Pacific, with the resort built into the terrain rather than on top of it. Architectural-minimalist meets monastic-nature: dark stained timber, glass, stone, and very little else.

The setting

Big Sur is the ninety-mile coastal stretch between Carmel and San Simeon — Highway 1 winds along cliffs, the Santa Lucia mountains drop into the Pacific, and the entire corridor is essentially preserved as wilderness with a few small enclaves of human activity. Ventana is on the inland (mountain) side of the highway, climbing the ridge above the ocean rather than perched on the cliff edge.

Carmel and Carmel-by-the-Sea are forty-five minutes north. Bixby Bridge (the iconic photo bridge) is fifteen minutes north. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is ten minutes south. Pfeiffer Beach (purple sand, the keyhole rock) is fifteen minutes south. McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns is twenty-five minutes south.

The building

A new-build resort completed across multiple phases, designed to integrate with the ridge — buildings stepped into the slope, dark stained timber siding, deep eaves, large windows oriented to forest and ocean views. Materials are stone, cedar, glass, and woven natural-fiber textiles. The aesthetic is architectural-minimalist with rustic-Americana undertones — refined but never glossy.

Public spaces include the Sur House restaurant, the Glass House (a treetop spa space), two pools, the Japanese-style baths, and the trails through the property.

The rooms

Fifty-nine rooms plus the glamping tents (a separate cluster of canvas-and-platform tents on a quieter part of the property). Hotel-room categories include the Big Sur kings, the larger suites with private decks, and the standalone cottages. Most rooms have wood-burning fireplaces, soaking tubs, and private outdoor spaces. Beds are king. Bathrooms are stone-heavy and large.

Rates from $995 in shoulder; peak summer and fall climb to four figures.

Food & drink

The Sur House is the on-site restaurant — modern California with regional ingredient bias and one of the best dinner views on the coast. Open to non-guests with reservations (limited; the property runs primarily for in-house guests). The bar runs through the afternoon and evening with a serious cocktail program.

On the property

Two pools (one quieter adult pool, one a larger heated pool), the Japanese-style hot baths (clothing-optional, adults-only), the spa with treatment rooms, hiking trails through the redwoods on the property, and a guided-experience program that includes star walks, foraging, and meditation.

Frequently asked
Is Ventana adults-only?
Yes — guests must be 18 or older.
Are the glamping tents really tents?
Yes — canvas-and-platform tents in a separate cluster from the hotel rooms, with shared bathhouse facilities. They're a different experience from the hotel rooms.
Can non-guests dine at Sur House?
Yes, but reservations are limited as in-house guests are prioritized. Book well in advance.
How far from Bixby Bridge?
About fifteen minutes north on Highway 1.
Is it open year-round?
Yes. Spring and fall are the most pleasant; summer fog and winter rain are part of the Big Sur rhythm.
