Post Ranch Inn

Mickey Muennig's cliffside icon — 39 rooms, two Michelin Keys, adults-only, the architectural pilgrimage.

Post Ranch Inn is the architectural pilgrimage of the California coast. Mickey Muennig's 1992 cliffside design — tree houses, ocean houses, butterfly-roofed Pacific suites cantilevered into the slope above the Pacific at 1,200 feet — hasn't aged because it was always supposed to look like this. Thirty-nine rooms. Adults only. Two Michelin Keys. Sierra Mar restaurant on the cliff edge. Rates that don't require explanation if you're booking the place.

There are a few hotels in the United States that function as architectural objects first and accommodations second. Post Ranch is one of them. Most guests who stay here have heard about it for years before they arrive.

The setting

On the cliff above Highway 1 in Big Sur, on the California coast. The property sits at roughly 1,200 feet of elevation, with the Pacific dropping off to the west and the Santa Lucia Range rising behind. From the main lodge, the view runs from Point Sur in the north to Cape San Martin in the south.

The drive in from San Francisco is three hours; from LA, six. From Carmel, fifty minutes. Highway 1 closures from landslides occasionally affect access; check before driving.

The building

Mickey Muennig was Big Sur's resident architect, and Post Ranch is his major built work. The buildings are dispersed across the property along ridge contours: the Tree Houses on stilts above the coastal scrub, the Ocean Houses with cantilevered glass walls toward the water, the Coast Houses lower on the slope, the Pacific Suites with their distinctive butterfly roofs. The materials are concrete, glass, and timber — a contemporary read on Big Sur vernacular that doesn't borrow from any single tradition.

The Sierra Mar restaurant is the building people photograph from the road. The lap pool — the Jade Pool, set into the ridge — is the pool people photograph from above.

The rooms

Thirty-nine rooms across the various building types. All are private, all have private decks or terraces, all have wood-burning fireplaces, soaking tubs, and the materials palette described above. Categories from "Coast House" (around $1,895) through Tree House and Ocean House up to the Pacific Suite. Beds are kings. Linens, fixtures, and finishes are at the level the rate implies. Wi-Fi works. There are no in-room televisions — the view is the entertainment.

Food & drink

Sierra Mar holds two Michelin Keys (per Post Ranch's own materials) and serves a contemporary California tasting menu with a heavy weight on Big Sur seafood, regional vegetables, and a wine list that's one of the deeper ones in the state. Open to non-guests by reservation; seating is limited and books out. The bar at Sierra Mar runs a serious cocktail program.
