The Best Independent Hotels Under $250 a Night

A good independent hotel doesn't have to cost $500 a night. Plenty of the best ones don't. The trick is finding them, because the $200 tier is where the actual chain motels live, and the search results don't sort them out for you.
So we did. Every independent hotel on our list with rooms from under $250, ranked by the Le Hotelist Score — not by price. The full list is here. This is the top.

The best, under $250
East Rock Inn — Great Barrington, MA. From $215. An eighteen-room converted motel at the base of East Rock Mountain, minutes from downtown. An 8.3 overall — one of the highest scores on our entire list, from a hotel that costs a third of what the ones near it charge. The highest Value score we've given anyone.
The Lavender Inn — Ojai, CA. From $245. An 1874 schoolhouse turned eight-room B&B with an on-site cooking school and herb gardens. Ojai without the Ojai rate.
The Society Hotel Bingen — Bingen, WA. From $235. A 1908 schoolhouse converted with cabins and a Japanese-style bathhouse, in the Columbia Gorge. A design hotel and a spa for the price of a Hampton Inn.
Aldrich Guest House — Galena, IL. From $215. An 1845 Greek Revival mansion, five rooms, walking distance to Main Street. Galena's whole appeal is that it's frozen in 1860; this house is part of why.
The Grafton Inn — Grafton, VT. From $245. An 1801 inn in a village so well preserved that a Vermont non-profit owns most of it. The whole town is more or less the hotel.
The Fife and Drum Inn — Williamsburg, VA. From $195. Nine rooms, family-owned, the only hotel actually in Merchants Square, across from Colonial Williamsburg. Under $200, in the middle of everything.
The pattern
Value doesn't come from a hotel being cheap. It comes from the price matching what you get. Every hotel here is small, owner-run or close to it, and honest about what it is — a converted motel, a schoolhouse, an old inn. Nobody's charging you for a spa you won't use or a lobby designed to justify the rate.
Several of them are schoolhouses, which turns out to be a good building to make a small hotel out of: solid, characterful, already laid out in rooms.
Where the sub-$250 tier actually is
It's not evenly distributed. The value hotels cluster in a few kinds of places:
- College and museum towns — Great Barrington, Williamstown, Rockland, Galena. Old buildings, walkable centers, rates held down by the fact that they're not resort destinations.
- Preserved villages — Grafton, Vermont; the Colonial Williamsburg edge. Somewhere a non-profit or a foundation is keeping the whole place intact, and lodging is part of the mission.
- The shoulder of a famous region — Ojai instead of Santa Barbara, the North Carolina coast instead of the Hamptons. Same landscape, different price.
Where you won't find sub-$250 independents: Big Sur, Aspen, Nantucket in July, anywhere the land itself is the luxury. That's just the market. If your trip is to one of those, the value list still ranks the best of what's there — it's just a higher floor.
Notes
- Breakfast is usually included at this tier, and at the good ones somebody actually cooks it.
- The rates are lowest midweek and off-season — a $215 room in October can be $280 on a summer Saturday.
- These book up. A great hotel at a fair price is not a secret for long.
