Aldrich Guest House
An 1845 Greek Revival mansion — five rooms, walking distance to Main Street.
An 1845 Greek Revival mansion on the bluff above downtown Galena — five rooms in a single-family Victorian B&B, walking distance to Main Street's mile-long stretch of preserved 19th-century commercial architecture. The Aldrich Guest House is the small-and-personal option in Galena: five rooms, single-family ownership, the kind of B&B that runs on a long-tenured operator's specific knowledge of the town.
Galena is the small Illinois town in the northwest corner of the state — the 19th-century river-port-and-mining boomtown that froze in time when the lead ran out, leaving Main Street largely intact as a National Historic District. Eighty-five percent of the buildings on the National Register, the kind of preservation density that makes the town feel like a film set in some weather.
The setting
Galena sits in the rolling hills of northwest Illinois, three hours west of Chicago, twenty minutes south of the Mississippi. Main Street runs along the bottom of a steep valley; bluff-top neighborhoods (where the Aldrich is) hold the larger 19th-century mansions. The town's full population is under 3,000.
Main Street is a five-minute walk downhill. The Galena River and the floodwall are at the bottom of the valley. Ulysses S. Grant's home (a National Park Service site) is fifteen minutes east. Apple River Canyon State Park is twenty minutes northeast. The Mississippi River and the Driftless Area landscape begin at the western edge of town.
The building
An 1845 Greek Revival mansion — symmetrical, with a temple-front portico, tall windows, and the kind of pre-Civil War prosperity-architecture Galena's boomtown produced. Materials are brick and stone outside, plaster, dark wood, and original hardwood flooring inside. The interior keeps the period bones (mantelpieces, wide-board floors, original moldings) and adds the modern infrastructure a B&B needs.
Public spaces include the parlor with a fireplace, the dining room, and the porch. The aesthetic is Neo-Victoriana with brass-and-velvet detailing — restrained period.
The rooms
Five rooms across the two main floors. Each is a different size and shape — typical of a 19th-century mansion converted to lodging. Bathrooms are private and updated. Beds are king or queen. Most rooms have fireplaces. The aesthetic inside is period-appropriate without crossing into theme.
Rates from $215, which is reasonable for the town and the building.
Food & drink
A full breakfast is included — cooked, served family-style in the dining room. There's no on-site restaurant. Main Street's restaurants are a five-minute walk downhill — Frank O'Dowd's, Vinny Vanucchi's, and a long list of casual options across Galena's full Main Street stretch.
On the property
The porch, the parlor, and the small garden are the social rhythm. No pool, no spa, no gym. The inn is small and personal.
