Water's Edge Inn

Seven rooms a block off the beach — the boutique alternative to Folly's chain motels.

Water's Edge Inn is seven rooms a block off the beach in Folly Beach, South Carolina — the small, owner-operated alternative to the chain motels and vacation rentals that dominate Folly's lodging market. It's a small inn with a clear position: walking distance to the beach, walking distance to Center Street's restaurants, no resort pretense.

Folly Beach sits ten miles south of downtown Charleston, on a barrier island. The town has a working-surf-and-fishing-village character that hasn't been fully redeveloped. The inn fits that scale.

The setting

On East Indian Avenue in Folly Beach, a block from the Atlantic and three blocks from the central pier. Center Street's restaurants — Bowens Island Restaurant (a regional institution for oysters), Lost Dog Cafe for breakfast, Rita's, Loggerhead — are within walking distance. The Folly Beach County Park (with the swimming beach and the dunes) is a short drive south.

The drive from downtown Charleston is twenty minutes east on Folly Road. From Charleston International Airport (CHS), forty minutes.

The building

A small clapboard inn with white trim and a wraparound porch, painted in the muted historic-coastal palette. The interior is refined-Americana of the practical sort — coastal palette, restrained decor, comfortable rather than designed. Public spaces include the small lobby and the porch.

It's owner-operated and the upkeep reflects that.

The rooms

Seven rooms across the building. Categories climb from compact rooms (around $285) up through larger rooms with private balconies and the better light. Beds are queens and kings, linens are good, bathrooms are functional and updated. Some rooms have small private decks toward the side garden.

It's a small operation; rooms book out in season.

Food & drink

There's no on-site restaurant. A continental breakfast is included. For dinner, the walk into Center Street reaches Folly's restaurants: Rita's Seaside Grille, Loggerhead Beach Grille, Lost Dog Cafe (breakfast institution), Bowens Island for oysters (a slightly longer drive). Charleston's downtown restaurants are twenty minutes by car.
