Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites

A converted 1840s whaling-captain property — 35 rooms in the Edgartown historic district.

Refined AmericanaHistoric InnRomantic · CountryClapboard & Porch

Thirty-five rooms in a converted 1840s whaling-captain property in the Edgartown historic district. Vineyard Square sits a block off Main Street, two blocks from the harbor, and a five-minute walk from the Edgartown Lighthouse. It's the central walking-distance hotel inside Edgartown proper — not on the harbor, not on the beach, but in the middle of the only walkable village stretch on Martha's Vineyard's east side.

The bones are 1840s clapboard and porch — a captain's house extended into a small hotel over the decades. The interior keeps the period frame and adds enough modern infrastructure (heated pool, working AC, decent bathrooms) to function as a real hotel.

The setting

Edgartown is the formal, white-fenced eastern village on Martha's Vineyard — the one with the captains' houses lining North Water Street, the lighthouse at the end, and the ferry to Chappaquiddick. The Vineyard Square sits one block in from Main Street, behind the bookstore and a couple of coffee shops, with the harbor and the lighthouse a short walk east.

Oak Bluffs is fifteen minutes northwest by car for the gingerbread cottages and the carousel. Vineyard Haven is twenty minutes for the ferry to Woods Hole. South Beach (Katama) is five minutes south by bike. The Vineyard's east side is what most first-time visitors come for.

The building

The original is an 1840s whaling-captain residence — clapboard, gabled, with the kind of wide-board floors and central staircase that the era's prosperous merchants built. Over the years it's been extended into a small hotel: 35 rooms across the original house and adjacent buildings, organized around a central courtyard with a pool.

The aesthetic is refined-Americana — clean white trim, navy accents, classic New England furniture, fresh hydrangeas. Public spaces are restrained, not heavy-handed colonial.

The rooms

Thirty-five rooms across the connected buildings. Categories range from compact in-village rooms to larger suites with private decks looking onto the pool courtyard. Bathrooms have been updated. Beds are good. None of the rooms have direct ocean views — Edgartown harbor is two blocks away, and the property faces the village rather than the water.

Rates start around $545 in shoulder; July and August on the Vineyard climb significantly.

Food & drink

There's no full restaurant on site. A continental breakfast is included. For dinner, Edgartown's main street is two minutes' walk: The Square Rigger, Atria, l'étoile, the Wharf, and a long list of casual seafood options are all close. The Edgartown food scene is more reliable than its on-Vineyard reputation suggests.

On the property

A small heated outdoor pool sits in the courtyard. There's a fitness room and a parlor with a fireplace for the cooler months. Bikes are available — the Edgartown bike paths to South Beach and Chappy ferry are short rides.
