Trapp Family Lodge

The von Trapp family's 2,500-acre Stowe estate — 96 rooms, Bavarian-revival architecture, fourth-generation family-run.

The Trapp Family Lodge sits on 2,500 acres above Stowe, Vermont — a Bavarian-revival mountain lodge built by Maria von Trapp and her family in the 1950s, now run by the fourth generation. Ninety-six rooms in the main lodge, plus guest cottages and chalet condominiums dispersed across the property. A working bakery, a microbrewery, an extensive cross-country ski trail network, and the kind of multi-decade family operation that has shaped the cultural register of central Vermont skiing.

The Sound of Music isn't part of the on-site experience in any kitsch way — the family treats the property as a working mountain lodge first, and the von Trapp connection as a piece of the history rather than a marketing prop.

The setting

On Trapp Hill Road above the village of Stowe, Vermont, in the Green Mountains. The drive into Stowe village is ten minutes downhill; Stowe Mountain Resort's Spruce Peak base is fifteen minutes. Smugglers' Notch is forty-five minutes north.

The drive in from Burlington is forty minutes; from Boston, three and a half hours; from Montreal, two and a half hours. Burlington International Airport (BTV) is the regional airport.

The building

A central main lodge in Bavarian-revival mountain register — peaked roofs, exposed timber, painted shutters, balconies on the upper floors — built into a hillside with views across the Green Mountains. Outbuildings (the DeliBakery, the Bierhall Brewery, guest chalets, condominium clusters) are dispersed across the 2,500 acres along trail and access roads.

The aesthetic is rustic Americana with country-estate overlays. The Bavarian-revival architecture references the family's Austrian roots without going into pastiche.

The rooms

Ninety-six rooms in the main lodge plus additional guest accommodations across the property. Lodge categories climb from compact rooms (around $525 in shoulder, more in peak) up through suites with fireplaces, balconies, and the better mountain exposures. Beds are queens and kings, linens are heavy, bathrooms are full. Some lodge rooms have working fireplaces. Guest cottages and condominiums offer multi-bedroom options for larger groups.

Food & drink

The on-site dining program is unusual for a lodge of this scale. The Main Lodge dining room runs contemporary American with Bavarian-Austrian inflections (regional schnitzel preparations, sauerbraten, Vermont-Austrian crossover dishes). The DeliBakery is a long-running on-property bakery with European-style pastries and breads. The Bierhall Brewery makes its own German-style lagers and ales. All three are open to non-guests.
