A 1940s desert motor court in Indian Wells reimagined as a Moroccan-themed boutique — 46 rooms around a courtyard pool, a small spa, a hookah lounge, and a mint-tea-on-arrival service that sets the tone. The Sands is one of the more committed thematic conversions in the Coachella Valley, and one of the few independent boutique hotels left between Palm Springs and La Quinta.

The aesthetic is bohemian-theatrical applied without restraint — carved wood, Moroccan lanterns, vintage velvet, brass detail throughout. It's the design opposite of the white-and-cactus desert minimalist genre. If you've decided the desert needs more color, not less, this is the property.

The setting

Indian Wells sits in the middle of the Coachella Valley, between Palm Desert and La Quinta, about twenty minutes east of Palm Springs proper. It's the quieter, more residential stretch of the valley — a lot of golf, a lot of low-rise resort scale, and the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament each March at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, two minutes away.

Palm Springs (the village, Aerial Tramway, Modernism Week) is twenty minutes west. Joshua Tree's south entrance is forty-five minutes north. The Salton Sea is forty minutes south.

The building

The original 1940s motor court structure has been heavily reworked. Single-story rooms wrap around a courtyard with a heated pool; the lobby and bar are at the front; the spa is a small detached wing. Materials are stucco outside, painted plaster, carved wood, tile, and lantern-heavy lighting inside. The Moroccan thread runs through every public space.

The pool deck includes lounge seating, fire pits, and the kind of evening lighting that makes the property look quite different at night than during the day.

The rooms

Forty-six rooms across the courtyard layout. Categories range from standard king rooms to suites with private patios. Each room continues the maximalist Moroccan aesthetic — patterned textiles, brass fixtures, dark wood. Bathrooms are tiled and have been updated. Beds are good. Most rooms open onto the courtyard or have small private terraces.

Rates from $495 in shoulder; tournament week and Modernism Week climb significantly.

Food & drink

There's an on-site restaurant — Moroccan-influenced California cuisine, breakfast through dinner, open to non-guests. The bar pours a serious cocktail list with a desert-and-Moroccan slant. A hookah lounge runs in the evenings during the season. Mint tea on arrival is the property's signature welcome.

On the property

The heated courtyard pool is the daily program — surrounded by lounges, fire pits, and bougainvillea. A small spa offers massage and Moroccan-influenced treatments. The hookah lounge runs in cooler months in the evenings.
