Six cabin-style suites on six riverfront acres in Mount Tremper, with the Esopus Creek out the back door and full kitchens, private decks, and wood stoves built into every unit. The Leeway is the small-and-considered Catskills lodging: owner-operated, single-property, six suites, no resort overlay.

The pitch is straightforward. You get a self-contained cabin with everything a long weekend needs (kitchen, fireplace, bath, deck), six acres of riverfront to wander, and the Esopus running past — the same Esopus that fly fishermen drive hours to fish. The property sits between Phoenicia (five minutes west) and Woodstock (ten minutes east), in the geographic middle of the Catskills.

The setting

Mount Tremper is the small village at the intersection of Routes 28 and 212 in Ulster County — the Catskill Forest Preserve immediately north and west, the Hudson Valley sliding south. The Esopus Creek runs through town, popular for tubing in summer and fly fishing year-round.

Phoenicia (with Brio's, Sweet Sue's, the Phoenicia Diner) is five minutes west. Woodstock and Bearsville are ten minutes east. Hunter Mountain ski area is forty-five minutes north. Belleayre is twenty-five minutes northwest. The Ashokan Reservoir's dam-bridge view is ten minutes south.

The building

Six cabin-style suites built as new structures on the property, each detached or semi-detached, with cedar siding, large windows facing the woods or the river, and the kind of Scandi-Catskills aesthetic the Hudson Valley has been doing well for the past decade. Materials are pine, wool, stone, and timber.

Public space is the property itself — paths through the trees, the riverbank, and a few common fire pits. There's no central lobby in the hotel sense; check-in is straightforward, the owner is involved, and the rest of the experience is the cabins.

The rooms

Six cabins, each different, all with full kitchens, private decks, wood stoves, queen or king beds, and private bathrooms. Most have river-side or river-view orientation. Bathrooms are well-considered. The aesthetic inside is upscale-bohemian-meets-rugged-outdoor — pine, wool throws, simple furniture, big windows.

Rates from $295 in shoulder; peak fall foliage and summer weekends climb.

Food & drink

No restaurant. Coffee and a small breakfast spread are typically provided. The kitchens in each cabin handle the rest. Phoenicia's restaurants are five minutes; Woodstock's are ten minutes east — the wider Catskills food scene is short drives away.

On the property

The six riverfront acres are the program. Esopus Creek for fishing, swimming, and tubing in summer; the surrounding hardwood for fall foliage; trails on the property. Fire pits, hammocks, and outdoor seating are scattered through the acres. No pool, no spa.
