Old Town Guest House

Four rooms in a turn-of-the-century miner's cottage — walking distance to the Old Town lift.

Four rooms in a turn-of-the-century miner's cottage in Old Town Park City, walking distance to the Town Lift and Main Street. Old Town Guest House is the small-and-personal version of a Park City stay — owner-operated, with the kind of B&B service rhythm (cooked breakfast, evening snacks, the owner knowing your name) that Park City's bigger ski-in/ski-out resorts don't offer.

The pitch is location and scale: walk to the lift, walk to dinner on Main Street, sleep in a quiet four-room inn that doesn't try to be more than it is. There's no spa, no pool, and no on-site restaurant — and that's appropriate for a four-room mining-town cottage.

The setting

Park City is the small Utah ski town forty minutes east of Salt Lake City, the host of the 2002 Winter Olympics and the Sundance Film Festival, with two ski areas (Park City Mountain and Deer Valley) running along the ridges above town. Old Town Park City is the original mining-era downtown — a single Main Street running uphill, with the Town Lift carrying skiers up to Park City Mountain from the bottom of the street.

The Guest House sits a short walk from the Town Lift and a short walk from the Main Street restaurant strip. Deer Valley's Snow Park base is five minutes by car. Sundance screening venues are scattered across town during the festival week.

The building

A turn-of-the-century miner's cottage — small, two-story, clapboard, in the vernacular Park City built when it was a silver-mining town in the 1890s and 1900s. The current owners have kept the bones intact (steep stairs, low doorways, original window frames) and added the modern infrastructure that a working B&B requires.

Materials are clapboard outside, painted wood and pine inside, with wool rugs and the kind of cabin-comfortable furniture that looks right with the period.

The rooms

Four rooms across the two floors. Each is a different shape and size — some are tucked into eaves, all have private bathrooms, beds are good. The cottage is small; the rooms are correspondingly compact. This isn't a problem if you're spending the day skiing and the evening eating, which is what most guests do.

Rates from $285 in shoulder; ski-season weekends and Sundance climb meaningfully.

Food & drink

A full cooked breakfast is included — served family-style in the dining room. Evening snacks (often hot soup or cookies after skiing) are also included. There's no full restaurant. Main Street's restaurants are a short walk for dinner.

On the property

The cottage is essentially the rooms, the dining room, and a small parlor. There's a hot tub in the back garden for guest use. No pool, no spa, no fitness room.
