A six-room English-garden Victorian B&B in downtown Half Moon Bay, walking distance to Main Street and a short drive from the coast. The Mill Rose has been an in-town B&B for decades — small, quiet, garden-focused, and family-run. It's the kind of property that's persisted because the original owners maintained it carefully, not because it was reinvented.

Half Moon Bay's lodging includes the Ritz-Carlton on the cliffs and a handful of in-town inns. The Mill Rose is on the small B&B end of the in-town option.

The setting

The inn sits on Mill Street in downtown Half Moon Bay, walking distance to Main Street's restaurants and shops (Pasta Moon, Half Moon Bay Brewing, Sushi Main Street, Half Moon Bay Bakery for the cinnamon rolls). Half Moon Bay State Beach is five minutes by car west. The Ritz-Carlton (and the cliff-walk along Half Moon Bay's coast) is 10 minutes south.

The drive in from San Francisco is 35 minutes south on Highway 1; from SFO, 25 minutes; from San Jose, 45 minutes north.

The building

A two-story Victorian-era home in clapboard and white-trim — restored as a B&B, with the rose and lavender gardens and English-garden plantings the inn's name references. Materials are clapboard, painted-wood interior, and brass. Public spaces include the parlor, the dining room (where breakfast is served), and the gardens.

Independently and family-owned.

The rooms

Six rooms across the main house. From around $395. Each room is decorated differently — Victorian-floral, English-country, or quieter classical — with antique furniture, four-poster beds, and updated bathrooms. Some rooms have fireplaces and private garden patios. The aesthetic is committed Victorian, not modern boutique.

Food & drink

A full breakfast is included — three-course, served in the dining room or at private tables in the gardens. There's no on-site dinner. Walking distance to Half Moon Bay's restaurants — Pasta Moon (the local destination Italian), Half Moon Bay Brewing (the brewery, on Main), Cetrella, Sam's Chowder House (10 minutes by car for the cliff-side seafood).

On the property

A small B&B amenity stack:

  • Full breakfast included

  • Hot tub
  • Walking distance to Main Street
  • Short drive to the coast

Who it's for

  • Couples doing a coast weekend who'd rather have a B&B than the Ritz
  • Repeat Half Moon Bay visitors who like family-run lodging
  • Garden-minded travelers
  • San Francisco escapees doing a 45-minute weekend

Who it's not for

  • Travelers wanting a beach-front room — the coast is five minutes by car
  • Anyone needing a hotel-style amenity stack
  • Light-amenity guests who want a kitchen

Nearby

Main Street's downtown is two blocks. Half Moon Bay State Beach is five minutes by car west. The Half Moon Bay coast (with the cliff walk along the Ritz-Carlton property) is 10 minutes. Pillar Point Harbor (with the Mavericks surf break a short paddle out, and the Sam's Chowder House at the harbor) is 10 minutes north on Highway 1. The Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival (held mid-October on Main Street) is the town's biggest event. Pescadero (with Duarte's Tavern, the long-running roadhouse) is 25 minutes south on Highway 1.
