Lumeria Maui
Twenty-five upcountry-Maui rooms on a 7-acre yoga-retreat estate — adults-only, vegan-friendly.
A 25-room adults-only retreat on a 7-acre upcountry-Maui estate in Makawao, run as a yoga-and-wellness property with a serious vegan-friendly kitchen. Lumeria Maui is the rare Maui lodging that isn't on the beach — the choice here is upcountry pasture, eucalyptus woods, and the slope of Haleakala in the middle distance, in exchange for a 30-minute drive to the coast.
It is one of the few Hawaii properties where the program — daily yoga, meditation, the kitchen — is the actual reason to come.
The setting
Makawao sits in upcountry Maui at about 1,500 feet, halfway up Haleakala's western slope. The town is a former paniolo (cowboy) settlement with a single main street of weather-worn wooden buildings. Lumeria's 7-acre estate is at the edge of town, with eucalyptus and ohia woods, an organic farm, and views down the western slope to the Pacific. The drive to Paia and the North Shore beaches is 15 minutes; to the Hana road, an hour east; to the Haleakala summit, 90 minutes up.
This is the upcountry version of Maui — cooler, less developed, and significantly less crowded.
The building
A restored estate house and outbuildings, originally built in the early 20th century as a Catholic seminary and later a residence. Public rooms include a yoga shala, a meditation hall, the dining room, and the gardens. Materials are clapboard, hand-troweled plaster, and pine. The aesthetic is upscale-bohemian without the precious tropes — restrained, deliberately serene, well-curated.
The rooms
Twenty-five rooms across the main house and outbuildings. Categories include classic king rooms, garden-view suites, and two-bedroom layouts. Beds are kings or queens; bathrooms are tile, refreshed. Most rooms have private lanais facing the gardens or the western slope. From-rates open around $545 in season including breakfast and the daily yoga program.
Food & drink
The Wooden Crate restaurant on-site runs three meals — vegetarian-leaning, vegan-friendly, with a strong farm-to-table program from the 7-acre estate gardens. The wine list is small but considered. Non-guests can book the dining room, generally with planning. Breakfast is included.
On the property
A yoga shala running daily classes (included), a meditation hall, an outdoor heated saltwater pool, the working organic farm, walking trails through the eucalyptus woods. Wellness programming runs throughout the week — sound baths, breathwork, cacao ceremonies. There's a small spa with bodywork.

The road to Hana — including Twin Falls, Wai'anapanapa, and the Seven Sacred Pools — starts in Paia and is a long-but-rewarding day trip.
