Lokal is six rooms in Old City, designed by a local creative collective, and operated as a service-light, design-forward apartment-hotel rather than a traditional inn. There's no front desk in the conventional sense. There's no restaurant. There is, instead, a clean, well-built mini-apartment with a kitchen, a contemporary palette, and a key code on the door. It is, without much competition, the best Airbnb-style stay in Philadelphia.
It also happens to be located in one of the few Philadelphia neighborhoods that's both walkable and worth walking. From around $325 a night, which for a full apartment in central Old City is a fair number.
The setting
Old City is Philadelphia's original colonial district — the blocks around Independence Mall, Elfreth's Alley (the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in the country), and the Delaware River waterfront. The neighborhood is a working mix of historic buildings, galleries, restaurants, and creative offices. Lokal sits a few blocks from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, walking distance to most of the historic district and to the Old City restaurant cluster around 2nd and 3rd Streets.
The drive from Philadelphia International is about fifteen minutes. Amtrak's 30th Street Station is a ten-minute taxi ride.
The building
A renovated historic building, threaded with new infrastructure rather than gut-renovated. Interiors lean architectural-minimalist: lime-washed walls, pale oak, brushed metal, large-format tile in the bathrooms. The design language is consistent across the six units and reads more like a small architecture-firm portfolio than a hotel.

Six rooms — really, six small apartments — each with a kitchen or kitchenette, a sitting area, and a contemporary bathroom. Layouts vary because the building does. Beds, linens, and bathrooms are at the level the price tier suggests. From around $325 in shoulder seasons.
Food & drink
There's no on-site restaurant. The kitchens in the units are real and functional. For dining out, Old City handles it: Royal Boucherie, Forsythia, Fork, Khyber Pass, Buddakan a few blocks west, Zahav within a ten-minute walk. Reading Terminal Market is a fifteen-minute walk for breakfast and lunch.

There isn't much "property" in the traditional sense — Lokal is closer to a serviced apartment than a hotel.
