L'Horizon Resort & Spa

A 1952 William F. Cody motor court restored to mid-century purity — 25 adults-only bungalows.

A 1952 William F. Cody-designed motor court restored to mid-century purity, with 25 adults-only bungalows on three acres in Palm Springs. L'Horizon was originally Jack Wrather's private compound, where Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, and Ronald Reagan stayed as guests of the Wrathers. The Steve Hermann renovation in 2015 stripped out the post-Cody alterations and brought back the original Cody plan: low horizontal lines, a single-story footprint, individual bungalows clustered around a pool, and the San Jacinto Mountains as the wall.

It is the canonical mid-century Palm Springs hotel, done by a serious modernist owner. Pierre Koenig's Stahl House and the Eames House are in the same family of California modernism; this is what hotel-keeping looks like in that idiom.

The setting

L'Horizon sits on East Palm Canyon Drive at the south end of the city, with the San Jacinto Mountains rising 10,000 feet directly west. Smoke Tree Ranch backs onto the property; the desert opens out east. The downtown Palm Springs grid is a five-minute drive north; the Indian Canyons trailheads are five minutes south.

The mountain wall is the ambient feature. Sunset light bounces off it for an hour. The dark sky after that is unusually quiet for an in-town hotel.

The building

Cody designed it in 1952 in low-slung California modernist mode — concrete masonry, broad eaves, glass walls facing the pool, and a deliberate refusal of any vertical drama. The 2015 renovation peeled away decades of paint and plaster to expose original concrete and steel, restored window proportions, and rebuilt the landscape to its original geometry. Materials: concrete, glass, timber, native stone. No faux-anything. No "desert lodge" theming.

The rooms

Twenty-five free-standing bungalows in three categories — the original 1952 King Bungalows, larger Premium Bungalows, and the Owner's Villa. All have private outdoor patios with daybeds, walk-in showers, and the original room dimensions kept. Beds are kings; bathrooms are concrete and stone with rain showers. From-rates open around $595 in season. There are no televisions in some bungalows by design, by the architect's logic that you came here for the mountain.

Food & drink

A small bar serves cocktails by the pool and a short menu. There's no full restaurant — the Hermann philosophy is that you drive into town for dinner. Coffee in the morning and continental breakfast are included. For dinner you head to Workshop Kitchen + Bar, Mr. Lyons, Truss & Twine, or Sandfish in town.

On the property

A heated saltwater pool, a hot tub, a small spa with treatment rooms, and a fitness room. The property is built around the pool. Adults-only.
