Hotel Saint George

Downtown Marfa's modernist anchor — 55 rooms, LaVenture restaurant, a wall-sized Donald Judd.

A 55-room modernist hotel built on the footprint of the historic Hotel Saint George in downtown Marfa, Texas. Concrete, glass, and timber construction, with LaVenture as the on-site restaurant and a wall-sized Donald Judd in the lobby. The Saint George is the architectural anchor of contemporary Marfa — purpose-built, design-aware, and the version of the town's hospitality stack that the Chinati Foundation visit naturally points toward.

This is the larger of Marfa's design-aware properties; the Sentinel (Hotel San Jose) is six rooms, this is fifty-five.

The setting

The hotel sits on West San Antonio Street, on the central plaza in downtown Marfa — across from the Presidio County Courthouse (the 1886 pink stone building that anchors the town). Walking distance to Marfa Burrito, the Capri, Bordo, the Get Go grocery, and the Chinati Foundation's downtown viewing offices. Highway 90 passes through town; the Big Bend region is two hours south.

The drive in from El Paso is three hours; from Midland-Odessa, two and a half. Coming over the Davis Mountains from Fort Davis is the prettier approach.

The building

A purpose-built contemporary modernist structure — concrete bases, glass walls, timber accents, deep eaves. Designed to integrate the historic Saint George (which had stood on the site since 1886) with a contemporary new build. The Judd Foundation — Donald Judd's permanent installation in Marfa — is a few minutes' walk; the wall-sized Judd in the hotel lobby connects the property to the broader Marfa minimalist vocabulary.

Independently owned and operated. The architecture is the property's narrative.

The rooms

Fifty-five rooms across kings, queens, and several suite categories. From around $395 in shoulder seasons; peak (Chinati Foundation Open House in October, March SXSW spillover) runs higher. Rooms get concrete walls, timber accents, large windows, and modern tiled bathrooms. The aesthetic is committed contemporary minimalism — clean-lined, restrained, and consistent.

Food & drink

LaVenture is the on-property restaurant — Italian-leaning, dinner most nights, plus breakfast and lunch. Open to non-guests by reservation. The bar runs cocktails through the evening. For destination dinners in town, the Capri (Cochineal alumni) and Bordo are 5–10 minutes' walk; Convenience West BBQ is on the edge of town.

On the property

Who it's not for

  • Travelers visiting outside the Marfa season — winter is quieter, summer is hot

Nearby

The Chinati Foundation (Donald Judd's permanent installation across multiple buildings on the south side of town) is a 10-minute walk; advance tickets required for the full tour. The Judd Foundation block buildings and Donald Judd's studio are also walking distance. The Marfa Lights viewing area is nine miles east on US-90. Prada Marfa is 35 minutes northwest. Frequently asked
Is the building historic?
The Hotel Saint George stood on the site from 1886; the current building is a new-build contemporary structure that integrates the historic site. Most of what you see is new architecture, not historic preservation.
Can non-guests dine at LaVenture?
Yes, by reservation. LaVenture is one of the better-reviewed restaurants in Marfa.
Is there art on the property?
Yes — including a wall-sized Donald Judd installation in the lobby. The Judd and Chinati foundations are walking distance for the full Marfa art program.
Is it open year-round?
Yes. Spring (March–April) and fall (October–November, including the Chinati Open House weekend) are peak; summer is hot but quiet.
Is parking included?
Yes, on-site parking is available. Marfa is small enough that most days you walk.
