Dawn Ranch

22 redwood-shaded acres on the Russian River — 55 cabins, Agriculture Public House, organic farm.

Upscale BohemianRustic AmericanaHistoric InnBohemian · TheatricalPine & Wool

A 22-acre redwood-shaded property on the Russian River, with 55 cabins, a working organic farm, and the Agriculture Public House restaurant in a converted barn. Dawn Ranch reopened in 2022 after a long renovation; the bones go back to the river-resort era of the 1920s, when Guerneville was the place San Franciscans came to escape the city heat. The new version is bohemian, design-aware, and a little theatrical — but the redwoods don't care.

It is the rare West Sonoma property that gets the river-resort thing right without leaning entirely into either nostalgia or "elevated" tropes.

The setting

Guerneville sits in the redwoods of West Sonoma County, an hour and forty-five minutes north of San Francisco, fifteen minutes off the Pacific at Jenner. The Russian River runs through town; Dawn Ranch's southern boundary is the river itself. Highway 116 runs past the front gate. The neighbors are Korbel Champagne Cellars (ten minutes), Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve (five minutes), and the small main street of Guerneville (a quarter-mile).

This is West Sonoma — Pinot country, fog-cool mornings, redwoods overhead. Different planet from the Cabernet flatlands of Napa.

The building

The main lodge is a converted barn-and-farmhouse complex. The Agriculture Public House restaurant takes the largest barn, with double-height ceilings, a long bar, and a stone fireplace. Cabin clusters fan out under the redwoods. Materials are pine, wool, board-and-batten siding, vintage-feel textiles. The aesthetic is upscale-bohemian without the precious moves — fewer macramé hangings than you'd fear.

The rooms

Fifty-five cabins ranging from king studio cottages to two-bedroom redwoods cottages with private decks. All have private entrances; many have wood-burning stoves or fireplaces. Beds are kings or queens; bathrooms are tile, generously sized in the higher categories. From-rates open around $595 in season, with weekend minimums during summer. Some cabins are pet-friendly — verify on booking.

Food & drink

Agriculture Public House — the on-site restaurant — runs lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. The menu pulls from the property's farm and the surrounding Sonoma producers; the wine list leans heavily Russian River and Anderson Valley Pinot. Non-guests book the dining room and the bar consistently. Breakfast is à la carte. There's a poolside bar in season.

On the property

A heated outdoor pool and hot tub set under redwoods. River access for paddleboards and swimming in summer. Hiking trails into the redwood groves. A working farm with chickens and beehives. Yoga and meditation programming on weekends. Fire pits at every cabin cluster.

Who it's for

  • San Francisco couples doing a Sonoma weekend who want river-and-redwoods, not Healdsburg
  • Pinot drinkers — this is the right side of Sonoma County for that
  • Travelers who liked the old Guerneville before it got expensive and want the design-forward version
  • Groups taking over a cluster of cabins

Who it's not for

  • Travelers who want a Hamptons-style polished resort
  • Anyone uncomfortable in a quirky, slightly theatrical environment
  • Light sleepers near the pool and main barn in busy weeks

Nearby

Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve is five minutes north — first-growth coastal redwoods, easy trails. Korbel Champagne Cellars, on River Road, runs free tours and tastings. The Russian River Vineyards (Williams Selyem, Rochioli, Gary Farrell) are clustered east toward Healdsburg. Goat Rock and Jenner are fifteen minutes west on Highway 116 for the Pacific. The town of Guerneville has a couple of good bars (Big Bottom Market, Boon Eat + Drink). Sebastopol is thirty minutes south for the Barlow food district.
