Cavallo Point Lodge
Fort Baker repurposed — 142 rooms in restored 1901 Army officers' quarters at the foot of the Golden Gate.
Fort Baker, the early-20th-century US Army installation at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, repurposed in 2008 as a 142-room lodge in the restored officers' quarters. Cavallo Point sits inside Golden Gate National Recreation Area, on the Sausalito side of the bridge, with views back across the Bay to San Francisco and the city skyline.
The property is both a historic-preservation project and a hotel — the original 1901 wood-frame officers' quarters are listed on the National Register, and the lodge runs them as guest rooms. A separate cluster of contemporary buildings (added in the 2008 conversion) holds the larger rooms, the spa, and the restaurant.
The setting
Fort Baker is on the Marin (north) side of the Golden Gate Bridge, immediately at the bridge's northern foot. From the property, San Francisco is across the water — the city skyline, Alcatraz, and the bridge tower fill the view. Sausalito's village is five minutes by car; the bridge crossing into San Francisco is two minutes.
The Marin Headlands, with their hiking trails and historic batteries, surround the property. Sausalito is five minutes north. San Francisco is across the bridge. Muir Woods is twenty minutes north. Stinson Beach is forty minutes north on Highway 1.
The building
The historic structures are early-20th-century US Army wood-frame officers' quarters — clapboard, painted white with dark trim, two stories with deep porches, in the kind of military-civic vernacular the era's federal architects standardized. The contemporary buildings (added 2008) are concrete-and-clapboard hybrids in sympathetic style.
Materials throughout are clapboard, painted wood, stone, and the kind of refined-Americana coastal palette that the conversion architects committed to. Public spaces include the lobby in the original parade-ground building, the main restaurant (Murray Circle), the spa, and the lawn facing the Golden Gate.
The rooms
142 rooms across the historic and contemporary buildings. Categories: historic rooms in the original officers' quarters (smaller, more characterful, period-appropriate), and contemporary rooms in the newer additions (larger, more conventional luxury hotel, with bay-view orientation). Most rooms have working fireplaces. Bathrooms are well-considered.
Rates from $695 in shoulder; bay-view rooms and the historic suites climb significantly.
Food & drink
Murray Circle is the main restaurant — California cuisine with Bay Area ingredient sources, breakfast through dinner, open to non-guests with reservations. The Farley Bar is the on-site bar and runs through the afternoon and evening. Both have local Marin and San Francisco followings beyond hotel guests.
