The Castle Inn

A 1957 oceanfront family-owned inn in Cambria, with 28 rooms, a pool, and a walking-distance position to Hearst Castle's gates. The Castle Inn is the working coastal-California pick — the alternative to a high-end Cambria B&B and the opposite of an interstate chain. Family-run for decades, with the kind of front-desk staff who knew you when you were a child if you've been coming since the 1980s.

It is the rare California coast lodging that hasn't been priced out of reach, even in season.

The setting

Cambria sits on Highway 1 about thirty minutes south of Big Sur's southern boundary and twenty minutes south of Hearst Castle. The Castle Inn occupies a parcel on Moonstone Beach Drive, on the west (ocean) side of Highway 1, with direct access to the Moonstone Beach boardwalk and the Pacific. Hearst Castle's tour gate at San Simeon is twenty minutes north; Cambria village is five minutes inland.

This stretch of California coast is the in-between zone — past the Big Sur prices, before the Santa Barbara crowd, with elephant seal beaches a few minutes north.

The building

A 1957 motor-inn-era property with stone foundations, redwood siding, and a low-slung profile that fits the era and the coast. Public rooms include a fireplaced lobby, a breakfast room, and a deck overlooking the pool and the bluff. Materials are stone, timber, and the kind of pacific-coastal aesthetic that was honest before it was redesigned. The renovation has refreshed without erasing.

The rooms

Twenty-eight rooms in a mix of categories. Standard kings and queens, oceanfront rooms with private decks and direct Pacific views, and a few suites with sitting rooms. Beds are kings or queens; bathrooms are tile, refreshed. From-rates open around $235 in season — strong value for oceanfront California. Wi-Fi is fine; cell is normal.

Food & drink

There's no restaurant. A continental breakfast is set out daily in the lobby. For dinner, Cambria village's Main Street is five minutes inland: the Sea Chest Oyster Bar (the one with the line), Madeline's, Linn's Restaurant (for the olallieberry pie), and Robin's Restaurant. The hosts will book.

On the property

A heated outdoor pool overlooking the Pacific bluff, a hot tub, the boardwalk at Moonstone Beach. There's no spa or gym in the resort sense.
