Caravan Outpost

An eleven-Airstream village in downtown Ojai — bocce court, fire ring, communal breakfast.

Eleven Airstreams arranged around a fire ring and a bocce court, three blocks from the heart of downtown Ojai. Caravan Outpost isn't a campground and it isn't really a motel — it's a small, considered village built around the idea that an Airstream is a perfectly good hotel room if you treat it like one.

The trailers are polished aluminum, the landscaping is gravel and citrus, and the communal areas — fire pit, picnic tables, a small breakfast nook — do most of the social work. People who stay here tend to spend the morning at the bocce court and the evening around the fire, which is more or less the point.

The setting

Ojai is the small valley town an hour and a half north of LA that California people drive to when they want to remember why they live in California. Citrus groves, oak hills, the Topa Topa range turning pink at sunset. Caravan Outpost sits a short walk from the Arcade — Ojai's main downtown stretch — so you can leave the trailer, walk to a coffee, walk to dinner, walk back. No driving required after check-in.

The Ojai Valley Trail runs along the old rail corridor a few minutes away — flat, paved, good for a morning bike or a slow walk. Lake Casitas is fifteen minutes south. The town itself is the draw, but the surrounding hills are why people stay an extra night.

The building

There is no building, exactly — that's the concept. The site is eleven 1970s-and-newer Airstream trailers, restored and outfitted, arranged on a tidy gravel lot with mature trees, string lights, and a central fire ring. The aesthetic is upscale-bohemian without being overdesigned: Pendleton blankets, raw wood picnic benches, a few cacti, a few succulents, and the trailers themselves doing most of the visual work.

Communal facilities — a check-in cabin, restrooms, a small breakfast area where coffee and pastries appear in the morning — are kept deliberately minimal. This is camping with plumbing, run by people who think about design.

The rooms

Each Airstream sleeps two comfortably, four in a pinch. They have queen beds, full bathrooms with showers, a small kitchenette, AC, heat, and the kind of warm interior wood paneling that the brand is known for. Some have private outdoor decks; all have bikes parked outside for guest use. Bed linens are real, towels are real, the coffee maker is real. It's a trailer, but it's a finished trailer.

Quirks: the windows are small, the hallways are narrow, and you can hear neighbors if they're talking outside. None of that is a surprise if you've ever been in an Airstream. If you haven't, plan accordingly.

Food & drink

There's no restaurant on site. Continental breakfast — coffee, pastry, fruit — is included and laid out in the morning. The point of the location is that downtown Ojai is a five-minute walk: Rory's Place, Nocciola, Topa Topa Brewing, the farmers market on Sundays. You'll eat well in town.

On the property

The communal layer is the whole experience: a bocce court, a fire ring stocked nightly, picnic tables, a hammock or two, bikes for borrowing. No pool, no spa, no bar. What's offered is curated — what's not is intentional.

  • Bocce court, fire pit, communal lounge
  • Bikes for guest use
  • Continental breakfast included
  • Pet-friendly (most trailers)
  • Open year-round
