Hotels Near Tanglewood (Independent Only)

The Red Lion Inn, the Williams Inn, and half the big hotels in Lenox are all owned by the same group. Here are the independent alternatives, all within a fifteen-minute drive of the shed.

Hotels Near Tanglewood (Independent Only)

A summer weekend at Tanglewood means three things: Boston Symphony Orchestra on the shed, dinner before, and a bed somewhere within twenty minutes afterward. The third part is where most visitors default to whatever Booking.com surfaces — which is almost always something owned by Main Street Hospitality Group.

Main Street owns the Red Lion Inn, the Williams Inn, the Porches Inn at MASS MoCA, Race Brook Lodge, and the Briarcliff (now The Little Lion). Five hotels in the region, one management company. If that's the kind of ownership structure you'd rather avoid, the list below is the short one.

Every hotel here is independently owned, is within 20 minutes of Tanglewood, and is either walking distance to a town you'd want to walk in or has a restaurant of its own worth arriving early for.

1. Doctor Sax House — Lenox (1.5 miles from Tanglewood)

The closest independent hotel to Tanglewood we'd actually send someone to. A restored 1874 speakeasy turned nine-room boutique, run by Kelly and Bryan Binder. The ground-floor café and lounge (dulu) means you can walk out of a Tanglewood concert and have dinner without getting in your car again.

2. Stonover Farm — Lenox (2 miles)

A restored farm with three en-suite rooms in the main house, a one-bedroom suite in the Schoolhouse, and a two-bedroom Rock Cottage. Small, luxury, owner-innkeeped. If you're traveling with another couple and want to take over the Schoolhouse, this is the best version of Tanglewood lodging on this list.

3. Granville House — Great Barrington (12 miles)

Five rooms, a Michelin Key, run by former New York restaurant managers. Named for the house in It's a Wonderful Life. The drive from Great Barrington to Tanglewood is fifteen minutes on backroads and you'll be tired either way, so a dinner here before a concert is a nice reversal.

4. The Birchwood Inn — Lenox (0.9 miles)

An 1857 Greek Revival on Hubbard Street. Eleven rooms. Recently relaunched (2022) under Seth Johnson and Russell Lange, who also run the Rookwood Inn down the street. Between their two properties you can book the closest independent walk from Tanglewood of anything on this list.

Drive to Tanglewood: 3 minutes (or 8 on foot). Full hotel page →

5. The Rookwood Inn — Lenox (1.1 miles)

An 1885 painted-lady Victorian on Old Stockbridge Road. Thirteen rooms. Sister to The Birchwood, same owners. We'd pick Birchwood over Rookwood only because we find Hubbard Street prettier at dusk.

Drive to Tanglewood: 4 minutes.

6. Garden Gables Inn — Lenox (1.3 miles)

An 18-room classic on five acres, walking distance to Lenox Village. Recently freshened up without losing its bones. Adds a pool to the mix if your summer Tanglewood weekend includes kids or non-concert hours.

Drive to Tanglewood: 4 minutes.

Farther out (if you need to, or want to)

If all of Lenox is booked during BSO peak weekends (which is most of July and August), these are worth the drive:

Tourists — North Adams (45 minutes)

The region's most architecturally significant hotel. 48 rooms in a reimagined '60s motor lodge, Sea Ranch-inspired cedar-and-steel buildings stepping down the Hoosic River. Co-owned by Wilco's bassist, designed by Ben Svenson. Combine a Tanglewood concert with MASS MoCA the next morning. Full review →

The Wilburton — Manchester, VT (70 minutes)

You're now crossing into Vermont, but a 35-room historic estate on 30 acres is worth the drive on a Saturday when everything in Lenox is booked. Family-owned since 1987.

Hotel Downstreet — North Adams (50 minutes)

(not on our list — currently a Main Street Hospitality project. Listed here as context only.)

The honest advice

Book any of these 6-8 weeks before a Tanglewood weekend. July and August sell out. If you're between options and reading this in June, try Stonover Farm or Granville House first — they have the smallest inventories and the fewest people know about them.
